New This Week...

Easy Pumpkin Costume:
2-6 yr. old
Courtesy of
Sew-whats-new.com

You need:
Orange broadcloth - about 3 yds.
Bright yellow or black fabric scraps
Scraps of green felt or fabric
Elastic
Thread to match

Directions:
Cut 6 pieces of orange broadcloth 27" long.
Each piece is 6" wide at the top, fanning out to 12" at the bottom.
The narrow edge is the top neck edge, the wider edge is the bottom edge.
Putting two sections right sides together, stitch down from top to bottom.
Stitch 3 sections together. This is the front of your pumpkin.

Cut large black or bright yellow triangles for nose and eyes. Glue on front.
Cut large smile and place below nose. Glue in place. Let glue dry completely.

Repeat with next 3 sections for the back of the pumpkin.

Stitch side seams leaving a 6" opening near the top for armhole.

Turn top raw edge under 1" and stitch. This is a casing for the elastic.
Leave a 2" opening to insert elastic.

Turn bottom raw edge under 1" and stitch. This is the second casing for your
elastic. Leave same opening to insert elastic.

Measure elastic to fit comfortably around neck. Add 3" to measurement. Pull elastic thru casing and stitch ends.
Elastic for bottom casing should allow for around their legs, above the knee. Pull elastic thru casing and stitch ends.
Stuff lightly around the bottom with batting, netting or tissue paper to pouf out your pumpkin

I also made a small beanie for a hat, made out of 6 orange triangles sewn together. Triangles measure about 6" long and 4-5" wide at bottom edge. Then I sewed a length of elastic to go under their chin to keep the hat on. A couple of green leaves were also applied at the top of the beanie. These I cut freehand from a scrap of green felt. Attach to top of beanie with quick
machine stitches.

There you have it, a little pumpkin. Now you just need that special little person to wear it on Hallowe'en.
