Ask the Party
Expert...
"Dear Party Expert,
My daughter is having a
slumber party with four girls and herself. She will turn nine.
We want to do a bon fire and let them cook hot dogs and marshmellows.
What kind of activities can I plan to go along with that idea?
Gigi
Hi Gigi-
A bonfire sounds like a great time for all. Since you are having
an old-fashioned cookout, you could stay with this theme.
Here are a few ideas for you:
1. Make oven mitts (potholders) first. Purchase a half to
three-quarters yard of quilting fabric (make sure it is flame
resistant.) Trace your hand on a piece of paper and use this as
a template. Don't forget to add an inch or so for the stitching.
Cut out two pieces for each mitt. Using a large-eyed needle and
heavy-duty thread, have the girls stitch the two pieces together.
Make sure the wrong side of the fabric is facing out. Once
stitched, turn inside out.
2. Sing around the campfire. What songs do you remember
from your childhood? Are there any forgotten ones the girls
would enjoy learning? Don't forget to tell a ghost story or two.
3. Make ice cream in a can or have a taffy pull. This will
stay within your theme. You can find these recipes in a
children's cookbook.
4. Wind down with a movie. Renting a move is a good idea
for settling the
girls down before bedtime. But, look for one from days gone by.
Little House on the Prairie would be a great addition.
Have fun!
