Beat Boredom in
Anytown, USA
by Mia Cronan
Even the smallest of
cities, though, offer activities for all types of lifestyles so we can
get out, meet new people, get involved, and stay active outside our
homes.
As we all know, it is quite uncommon
anymore for one family to stay in the same city for a lifetime. We are
such a mobile society now, due to job transfers, the globalization of
technology, and improved long distance communications. In being so
mobile, however, it is hard to really establish "roots" and
settle into a community, knowing that one might have to pick up and
move again in a few years. Even the smallest of cities, though, offer
activities for all types of lifestyles so we can get out, meet new
people, get involved, and stay active outside our homes.
In our small community, for instance,
our library offers a Story Hour three times a week that the kids
really love. A number of books are read to the kids, a craft is
taught, and a fun physical activity is presented in each session.
Check out your library to see what it offers in the way of
children’s education. If nothing is available, this might be a fun
opportunity for you to get something started!
Your church could probably use a
lending hand with special events, paperwork, poster-making, or
retreats. This is a great way to be involved in your church community
and set an example for your children (most of these things can be done
with your children at your side), and get to know the people with whom
you attend church. Offer your services and see how quickly your offer
is accepted.
Does your community offer a Gymboree® program? Kids love the physical
activity they can get through tumbling and gymnastics. Even newborn
babies can participate. Gymboree® offers musical activities, games
that focus on motor skill development, pre-gymnastics, relay games,
and activities that concentrate on social skills, such as taking
turns. These programs are typically well-supervised and taught by well
informed instructors. You can also meet other mothers through this
regular interaction. Gymboree® can be contacted by calling
219-864-0266 or via e-mail at gymbo@jorsm.com
We have all heard that exposing
our children to Mozart can enhance their mathematical development.
Well, you may want to look into the Kindermusik® program for your
child. This program is offered for newborns to age seven, and there
are facilities all over the country. Kindermusik® strives to
contribute to a child’s musical, physical, social, emotional, and
cognitive advancement. The program also focuses on language skills and
attentive listening skills, which lead to a better readiness for
reading and writing skills. More information can be obtained by
calling 1-800-628-5687.
Joining a playgroup is a wonderful way to get out
of the house. Check out HOW TO START A PLAYGROUP for information on
putting together a group of moms and kids for a great time!
