How to Say It To Your Kids
(Book Review, by Mia Cronan)
by Dr. Paul Coleman
ISBN 0-7352-0177-3
Published by Prentice Hall Press

The Right Words to Solve Problems, Soothe Feelings, and Teach Values

No family is totally void of touchy issues, tragedy, or times of trouble.  This book makes the perfect handbook for when our tongues are tied, and we just don't know how to explain life lessons to our children.  We all want to say the right thing and have our children was away with the right ideas, but it's hard.

The book touches on just about every topic you can think of, from adoption to the worried child.  The table of contents in the front lists the life challenges we're dealt, then directs the reader right to the section where it gives examples of the right way to say things, the wrong way to say things, and the reasons why.  Dr. Coleman gives us "Things to Consider" for each topic and a "Smart Talk" information box that gives statistics and interesting facts on that topic, so we can be more informed about what our children need to hear from us, their role models.

There is a troubleshooting section in the back, and if the table of contents isn't enough to help you find the help you need, the index in the back picks up the ball and runs with it.

I was especially pleased to see that Dr. Coleman did not avoid discussing God, as so many "experts" want to do today.  He touches on dealing with the child that doesn't want to go to church, as well as other religious issues.

I would highly recommend this book to any parent concerned about saying the right things to their children.
